Samoa makes call for international cooperation through UN 75 Initiative.

Samoa is one of the smaller nations among the 186 countries that recently participated in the UN 75 global dialogue.

The dialogue includes conversations and an online survey that seek to capture global perspectives on the UN in its 75th year, while also asking people what they see as the key challenges of the world in the coming years.

Launched in January 2020, UN75 is the largest exercise ever mounted by the UN to gather public opinion and crowdsource solutions to global challenges.

Preliminary findings from a newly released UN 75 Update Report, shows that an overwhelming majority—95%--of respondents agreed on the need for countries to work together to manage global issues. Support for multilateralism has noticeably increased since late February as COVID-19 spread around the world. Ideas on strengthening international cooperation included more effective partnerships with civil society and the private sector, and greater involvement of women, youth, indigenous peoples and vulnerable groups in policymaking. These proposals were supported across age ranges from the survey participants.

At the country level, respondents from Samoa identified better access to health care, more environmental protection, and better access to education as the three changes they wish to witness in a more sustainable and safe world for the future.

Respondents from the Pacific region noted risks from climate change, risks related to health, and risks arising from new technologies as key concerns.

The United Nations Multi-Country Office in Samoa is committed to working with the people of the region to draw attention to these issues and to pursue programmes that meet the issues of primary concern for the Pacific.

“We encourage the people to understand that their voice shapes the world, through development programmes designed and delivered by the UN for the people.”- UN Samoa MCO RC – Simona Marinescu
