UN discuss climate financing with partners

The capacities of the Pacific SIDS to access and manage climate financing from various sources such as vertical, bilateral and multilateral funding sources remains, a weak point.

Whilst many Pacific SIDS have been able to access some funding through multilateral partners from substantial vertical funding sources such as the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF), capacities in countries to manage these funds and delivering of results on the ground are key areas of concern and need. 

Strengthening partnerships on climate financing was the focus of discussions today in Suva Fiji, for the UN Multi Country Offices in Fiji and Samoa and their development partners on how they can better support the Pacific SIDS on climate financing access and management.

A huge turnout of over 100 participants had to opportunity to hear about the work of the UN in the Pacific in light of the UN Reforms and the Multi Country Offices review as well as about the 'Cooperation Framework' that guides the planning and implementation of the UN work aligned to serve and support the country's development priorities.

The UN also had the opportunity to hear and discuss plans, initiatives and priorities of the development partners in the Pacific so they can synergize and form stronger partnerships to deliver effectively together.

The Development Partners Dialogue Forum is expected to be a series of twice-annual dialogues that the UN will convene, with a specific theme for each. This is the first, Development Partners Dialogue Forum will feature the theme “Strengthening Partnerships for Sustainable Climate Financing in the Pacific”.

The Development Partners Dialogue follows the UN Country Team in Fiji and Samoa joint retreat which will start of Wednesday 29th Jan to Friday 31st, Jan 2020.
