Planned communications essential to achieve global goals.

Mobilizing the people to be in forefront of movements that accelerates the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals within the last ten years of the Agenda 2030, is an urgent move everywhere, even for the people of the Cook Islands.

Representatives from the government, non-governmental and civil society organisations in a specific workshop session on the Sustainable Development Goals in the Cook Islands agreed that people are active and engaged when they are more aware and understanding of the Agenda 2030.

The Agenda 2030, is a plan of action for people, planet and prosperity. It also seeks to strengthen universal peace in larger freedom and everyone everywhere needs to act in collaborative partnership to implement this plan. 

Planned communications is therefore a fundamental process not only for awareness and engagement but also to strengthen partnerships at the community level. 

‘If the SDG’s is for the people, it cannot be achieved if  we do not work together and if we are  not active to influence change in our lives and our communities, according to one of the participants of this workshop.

“More awareness of the SDG’s in our local language is needed’ said Mr Maunga who represented the Cook Islands Workers Union at the workshop.

‘The SDG is a continuum, when we are more aware and engaged, after 2030, we will continue to be more conscious and conservative to ensure that we use our resources sustainably for the next generations’, said one of the participants.

At the end of the workshop, the participants discussed and developed the Cook Islands SDG Communications Plan that will guide their activities to enhance people’s participation to commit to sustainable development.

The workshop organized by the Resident Coordinators Office on the SDG’s enabled the  participants to understand the composition of the UN Country Team in Samoa within the context of the UN Reforms and the campaigns in place to ensure that the world and everyone is on the same path towards realizing the ‘leaving no one behind’ vision.

The RCO will finalize the Cook Islands SDG Communications Plan that strategically envisions the achievement of their own national development goals as stepping stones to reaching the global goals for sustainable development.

This will also complement their preparatory efforts towards the mid term review of their National Sustainable Development Plan and the SDG Voluntary National Review.
